My 2026 Calligraphy Goal … or Lack Thereof

How has 2026 started off for you?
In past years, I started off the new year with lofty goals & detailed resolutions broken down into each quarter and month.
This year is a little different, and so is how I’m approaching my calligraphy practice.
In 2025, I had the goal of practising calligraphy everyday. In the later half of the year, I refined this goal to make it more flexible.
In 2026, I don’t have any specific goals.
Instead, I’m setting calligraphy as an ✨intention.
(Along with others like move, read and learn.)
This means I can be fluid in how I approach calligraphy & calligraphy practice throughout the year.
I can choose to, for example:
Practise 30 minutes everyday this month
Write 4 long quotes this month
Dedicate a month to studying capitals
Focus on calligraphy + watercolour this month
Learn a new script this month
Take a fun calligraphy-related course this month
Spend a month revising Spencerian (or any script that I’ve learnt and put aside)
I also have a running list of smaller things I want to do / practise, so I don’t default to repetitive mundane practice on plain guidelines day after day.
At the end of each month / planning cycle, I’ll journal to figure out what I need more / less of.
Then sprinkle in a pinch of intuition to decide what to do next.
2025’s goal of practising everyday sadly became a chore by December. It was yet another item to check off my to-do list.
I hope 2026 will be more fun, creative and explorative. If the first 2 weeks of January are an indicator, I think I’m off to a good start. 😊
How about you?
What are your goals for 2026?
Even if you don’t have any detailed goals, it’s probably useful to look back to look forward:
What do you need more of?
What do you need less of?
